He offered her his “bet,” and I can imagine a zillion other shows that just would have left it there as a sexy “edgy” flirtation, but no - Holmes stopped himself in the middle of the flirt to make it clear that he was not conditioning his silence about her thefts on her going on a date with him.

Similarly, when he came to see her after she refused to go out with him again, obviously someone somewhere was afraid he’d look like a stalker, and so he began his speech by making it very clear that he understood it was her right to refuse him - I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a show actually spell that out in words before, because we’re all supposed to understand that the romantic couple is meant to be and therefore all’s fair, etc etc.”

Hey, help from those who’ve been there. My mil is concerned that my sil may be developing an eating disorder ever since she moved to Atlanta because of the amount of weight she’s lost.

now, mil is a very….she can take a conclusion quickly and run with it. But sil best friend is having some concerns too, and that’s a little more worrying. On the other hand, she’s taken up hiking since she moved, and combined with the “doesn’t make a lot of money” diet that can explain the rapid weight loss too.

Husband asked her to keep a log of what she’s eating, and if its adequate, we’ll get mil off her back. But that seems to me that it can backfire on us if there is a problem. Any suggestions?

The one person in my family who suffered from an eating disorder had a host of problems. She suffered low self-esteem stemming from years of verbal abuse and manipulation, possible untreated depression. Her life had been micro-managed by her immediate family, who kept her away from friends and other relatives. What she ate was the only thing in her life she could control for herself. She recovered, but several years later she stopped contacting us. We haven’t heard from her for five years and counting. She was the maid of honour at my wedding, and she has no idea that marriage is over. I miss her terribly.

If this is an eating disorder, perhaps there are other factors in her life that the family needs to address/can help with? Trying to tell her what to eat could definitely backfire, perhaps someone can sit and listen to her. Maybe a therapist, someone without family ties. There might be a lot of things that she’s leaving unsaid, and she may not be comfortable talking about them with the people who are so tied up in her life.

I do not regret loving him.

I will never apologize for believing in him, for expecting better of him. Yes, he failed me. Yes, he betrayed my trust. But I am not a fool for having faith in humanity, for demanding that he love me as a person and not as a sex object. I am disappointed in him, but I will not be bitter. And I will never stop expecting better of every person, male or female, whom I chose to invest myself in.

So no, I will not let you coerce me into a date or sex, I will not let you bully me into a submissive role. I will not accept a man’s “nice guy” persona, I will not acquiesce to “that’s the way it works” from the women who have internalized misogyny. Men are not wolves, women are not sheep, we are all sentient human beings capable of rational thought. I will demand no less from the people I choose to invest myself in.

If you can’t handle that, that’s your problem, not mine.
